Obadiah Gave A Warning

1:11 In the day that you stood on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even you were as one of them.

1:12 But you should not have looked on the day of your brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither should you have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

1:15 For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as you have done, it shall be done unto you: your reward shall return upon your own head. (Obadiah 1:11,12,15 KJV)

Obadiah, the prophet, is the shortest book in the Bible, but he had one message for some people. Since I love to teach what I have found in the Bible, I will give you the back story that made this message possible. Many times, I have said the Bible stories repeat even today.

Abraham’s twin grandsons, Esau and Jacob, fought each other frequently. They finally split and had their own family. Esau’s descendants were called Edomites. Jacob’s descendants were called Israelites. For centuries they burned with hatred toward each other. To shorten a long story, the Babylonians destroyed the Israelites and the Edomites happily applauded.

Obadiah gave a message to the Edomites that God would see to it that they would find themselves in the same situation. He justified the coming judgement on Edom by reminding them of their pride and violence against the people of Jerusalem. The Edomites had helped the enemy destroy their own people.

Some wonder how this apply to today’s situations, and this is how I see it. In our political system there are two primary parties. In each party there are factions that do not adhere to the norms of their political party. The Republican party say they stick together but in reality, they have become a splintered group.

There is Trump’s sect, McConnel’s sect, and then there are those that say they are Conservatives. They are apart yet together they want to destroy the Democrat. When the Democrats get defeated in some way they gloat and boast the Republicans are winners and are the best.

Obadiah 1:15 say it all. What was done to others will be done to them. Trump should have listened, if it was ever told to him, then he wouldn’t be in the situation he is in today. On Judgement Day, when you attempt to enter Heaven, God will remind you of your transgressions, against Him and against others.

The problem is brother and sister, like the brothers Esau and Jacob, is fighting brother and sister. I have mentioned that Congress works for the people. A Representative and a Senator work for the same state, same people, and same districts, whether Democrat or Republican and should work together for the shared interests. When I hear that all a party want to do is to stifle the other side, I know they are lost to Hell and will never set a foot in Heaven.

Obadiah made a warning, and the alarm bells are still ringing. Is anyone listening? Does anyone want to listen?
